We left our hotel in rain and had cloud all the way to Saltzburg; it wasn't the best day to be sight seeing. Our guide was waiting for us and took us through gardens and into the old town. His standard introduction fell flat as he was trying to weave 'The Sound of Music' into his tour. This may be fine for English speakers, but, despite him singing 'Doh a deer, ....." the film was unknown to our French group.
We crossed the river by the Hotel Sacher (Salzburg version) . The bridge is adorned with locks.

The streets on our way to the first Mozart stop. Many shops had intesting signes outside, including a Macdonalds sign which must have been made specially.

Mozart was born in Salzburg and spent his early years there, although he travelled a lot before finally settling in Vienna. Geburtshaus, where Mozart was born dates back to the 12th century. Mozart's parents rented an apartment there from 1746 until 1773. Naturally, today, it is a museum.

Salzburg Cathedral was founded in 774 by St Rupert and St Vergilius (who came from Ireland) on the remains of a roman town. It was rebuilt after a fire in the 9th century and again in the 12th and 17th centuries.

The Residence is an impressive palace in the centre of the old town. It was used by officials for audiences with local people.
Melk is a small town on the Danube. First mentions of it are in the 9th century. It is noted for the beautiful Melk Abbey, a Benedictine monestery.
