Kirinda and in search of the elusive leopard

Legend has it that, long ago, a king sent his daughter away from his kingdom in a small boat, in penance for the king having killed a Buddhist monk. It was assumed that his daughter would die at sea. However, the princess, Viharamahadevi, who was very beautiful, eventually landed in Sri Lanka at Kirinda and in due course, the local king married her and they had sons who became kings. There is a temple there, overlooking the sea, and a small village with a post office, together with a very old tree.

The steps cut into the rock on the way up to he Temple.

Statue of Princess Viharamahadevi and the temple.

Inside the small temple.

There was a village here that was destroyed by the tsunami of 2004 and there is little left, however, there is a post office.

Then we returned to our hotel until our second and final safari.
