Baltic states - 1. Lithuania

Earlier in the year, we popped into a travel agent in Beziers to gather information about a trip we had booked. There, we spotted trips on the Yellow Train which we enjoyed earlier in the year, and the Baltic states.

Our bus was to pick us up before 2am and take us to Toulouse airport for the flight to Vilnius, via Frankfurt. There we collected a bus and a guide for the 7 nights in the Baltic states.

We flew with Lufthansa, first to Frankfurt and then, on to Vilnius.

Our first stop is Uzupys, a small area of Vilnius in Lithuania separated from Vilnius by the river Vilniua. It is a UNESCO site and is home to many artists according to the description. It was somewhat disappointing, because there was little evidence of art and the area looked rather run down.

Uzupys has a 'constitution' which, having been created on April 1st, is clearly not serious. This is displayed on a wall in many languages.

We then continued our walk, taking in several churches. Many churches were closed or changed during the soviet era but are now open and in use or being restored and in any state between.

Churches of Saint Anne and Saint Bernardi

The Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit was rebuilt in the 18th century.

Then we were ready for our evening meal and bed, after such an early start.
