We started in the enormous market, which was close to our hotel.

There are several markets, fish, vegetable and flower amongst them. It was surprising to see so many Mediterranean vegetables looking so fresh so far north. I could imagine being in the markets of Nice or Toulon.

Then we had a bus tour of the sights

Riga has some very interesting buildings. We joined the procession of guided tours along a couple of streets. Pat always enjoys the details, and so this was a real treat. Some of the buildings are University departments, embassies and the like.

Latvia became independent in 1991 and thee is plenty of reconstruction in progress in the centre of the town with buildings covered while work takes place. The coverings give a hint of what will return.

St Mary's Cathedral and the cloisters. The organ is being restored and the cloisters house various old artifacts. It was founded in 1211; the organ is from 1884.
